Techland is a developer that’s previously embraced the PC modding community, so it’s bizarre to see the studio seemingly adopting a hardline approach to prevent anyone from altering Dying Light’s game files.
Reddit users are reporting that Techland and its publisher Warner Bros are filing DMCA claims against various Dying Light mods, including relatively minor tweaks that simply remove the game’s film grain effect.
It’s possible that this is just overzealous attempted protection of its IP from Warner Bros, a member of the ESA, but it’s certainly irritated the same fans who enjoyed such a vibrant and creative mod community with the Dead Island games.
It doesn’t help matters that the 2.1 patch for Dying Light contains the note ”blocked cheating by changing game’s data files”. Changing a game’s data files is pretty much the essence of modding, after all.
Techland is yet to issue a response to fan concerns. We’ll keep you updated on the latest developments.
