Paul Hellquist was the creative director for Borderlands 2, but he’s now left Gearbox’s madcap co-op looter to join the team at Robot Entertainment, who are currently working on online tower defence title Orcs Must Die! Unchained.
Before Borderlands Hellquist worked for nine years at Irrational Games (it seems like every developer in the industry worked there at some point or another), where he lead the production of Bioshock.
“On behalf of all of us at Robot Entertainment, I am thrilled to welcome Paul Hellquist to our team as Lead Designer,” writes Robot’s CEO Patrick Hudson. “I spent a considerable amount of time with Paul recently, and I was consistently impressed with his breadth of thinking, passion for great design, and humility. His remarkable portfolio of work is clearly well-earned. Paul is a great fit for Robot, and I expect him to have a profound impact on the games we make, starting with Orcs Must Die! Unchained.”
Unchained is currently in closed beta, the next stage of which is due to start soon. It’s a free to play version of the popular tower defence series, with PvP action taking the place of slaughtering AI enemies.
We played it back in June of last year, and came away relatively impressed. You can find out more about the game on the official website.
