Atari and developer Pure FPS kicked off the Alone in the Dark: Illumination multiplayer closed beta over the weekend. It’s available to anyone who pre-ordered the third-person horror on Steam.
Featuring three playable classes, the Witch, Hunter and Engineer, the beta version also contains three levels set around the haunted town of Lorwich.
The Witch class can cast lightning spells when not shooting things, the Hunter specialises in heavy weapons like flamethrowers and assault rifles, and the Engineer relies on a bunch of different gadgets. Character traits and skill trees have been introduced since the last beta, while hit detection and spawn improvement has also been improved.
As for the maps, there’s one from each of the game’s three co-operative campaigns; ‘Mines of Lorwich: Ghost Town’, ‘Beneath the Graves: The Coffinmaker’, and ‘Factory of Fear: Spectral Railway’.
I’ve no idea whether Alone in the Dark: Illumination will be any good (Atari’s last reboot doesn’t exactly bode well), but at least the title keeps me amused. I’m not sure Atari has quite grasped the importance of the words ALONE and DARK in the game’s title. Hence, they’ve made a co-operative game called Illumination. Heh.
