Triumph Studios has revealed that it’s working on adding modding support to its excellent fantasy 4X game Age of Wonders 3. To demonstrate this new feature, the team has also released a picture of – and I quote – a “cadaver wielding necromancer’s scythe riding a nightmare horse”.
Which is everything I’ve ever wanted and more, all in one sentence. Modding tools will arrive in the next patch, when Triumph is finished polishing bug-fixing.
“You’ll be able to overhaul game balance, add new specializations or even a brand new units,” the team explains. “These mods can then be shared with the global player base, via Steam Workshop or the mod site of your preference. You won’t be able to do all-the-things – e.g. change core gameplay, models or textures – but if its something our designers can do it, you’ll can do it too. Mods can be enabled and disabled in the launcher – so you can pick and choose which you’ll use – and can even be used in multiplayer.”
Not total freedom then, but along with the game’s very solid level editor you should have more than enough tools at your disposal to create some cool new campaigns. I’m guessing it will be about ten minutes before someone knocks up a Game of Thrones mod. Triumph says it will have more information for us soon.
