We already know that Beamdog, the team behind the slightly buggy but generally pretty great Enhanced Editions for Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, is creating a spin-off tale codenamed Adventure Y, to take place slap bang in the middle of Bioware’s classic fantasy RPG adventures.
It looks like we’ll be finding out more about the project pretty soon. A timer has gone up over on the game’s official website, counting down until July 3.
This won’t be the full sequel that fans have been hoping for the last fifteen years or so, but it will star the original cast, and feature the Bhaalspawn as the player character. Whether we’ll be able to import our characters from the previous games remains unclear – that would require some de-levelling in the case of BG2 – but it seems pretty likely.
As you can see from the few screenshots already released, the game once again makes use of the venerable Infinity Engine. As for a potential Baldur’s Gate 3 down the line?
“We’d be lying if we said we never think about doing a Baldur’s Gate III game,” wrote Beamdog back in January, “so we won’t say that. But we will say there’s nothing in the works yet regarding BGIII or a 5th edition (the latest edition of the tabletop rules, released a couple of months ago) game.”
