Atlas Reactor is weird, interesting game. It’s a little bit XCOM, as you’ve got a modern turn-based strategy interface with which to select movement and commands. It’s a little bit MOBA, since it’s a team-based online game where you’ve got to coordinate with your fellow players to succeed. You can also try it out with the game’s Free Mode launching next week.
With Free Mode, you’ll be able to try out a rotating selection of playable characters–”Freelancers” in the game’s parlance–in the basic game mode. That sounds like most any free-to-play title, but you won’t be purchasing additional content piecemeal. A single purchase will buy the remainder of the game for you, including all Freelancers, access to custom and ranked games, and unlimited unlocks of cosmetic items you’ve earned.

If you’ve tried Atlas Reactor previously, you might note that this doesn’t quite work with their previous system of unlocks. That’s being completely revised. All in-store items are now obtainable through normal gameplay, Freelancer leveling has been revised, the account level has been removed, and the crafting system no longer exists. It looks like unlocks will now be using an Overwatch-like system where you’ll get a package of items, with duplicates turning into currency for specific bits of gear.
The update will launch August 9. It’s very interesting to see a title like Atlas Reactor experimenting with a not quite free-to-play payment plan–this is actually more like a shareware model. The game also looks pretty neat. So check it out!
