Remember Godus? Peter Molyneux’s indie project that was revealed as part of the iOS block-tapping oddity, Curiosity? Where that one kid was going to be god of the game world and receive part of the game’s profits? Yeah, that’s the one!
Well, after having gone radio-silent since September last year, the god game just got a major update in the form of Godus Wars, a combat-themed RTS update. You’ll take control of one of four deities and lead your units to war with other godlings, assisting your troops through divine powers and power cards. Among your potential opponents is Bryan Henderson, the “winner” of Curiosity.
This will be the first time he’s appeared in the game which, despite having launched way back in 2013, is still missing features–notable the wacky God of Gods concept which would make a particular player god of the game for a time–that the entire concept was built around. You might say that’s par for Molyneux’s course, but at least Fable actually came out. Growing frustrated with the controversy around his persona and Godus’ apparent lack of progress, he declared he would not be talking with the press again after an interview with the Guardian.
A year later, he’s the subject of a lengthy interview with Eurogamer.
I want to root for Molyneux, as folks with ideas as big as his are what keeps the industry moving and evolving. His ideas are so huge that he’s only occasionally able to deliver on them, and he’s suffered as a result of the the internet’s reactionary nature and his massive visibility.
Of course, none of that sympathy makes the current state of Godus any better. Godus Wars adds some major features to the game, but it may be too little, too late. Wars will be a free update that ultimately replaces the original Godus on Steam. If you’re cynical, you might see that as a move to free the game from its “mostly negative” reviews. Godus Wars is available in Early Access for $14.99.
