Frontier Developers has announced that since the game’s launch back in December 2014, the space sim Elite: Dangerous has sold 1.4 million units across all platforms, including PC, Mac and the Xbox One.
The game made its debut on Kickstarter in November 2012, raising over $2.2M in crowdfunding the following January 2013. It launched on PC one year later in December 2014, with the Mac and Xbox One versions being released in May and October of 2015 respectively.
The game slowly grew when numerous post-launch updates, before having its first major expansion, Horizons. The new season of content added major gameplay features to the base game, including planetary landings, ship-launched fighters and multi-crew co-op.
“We have an amazing player community,” said Frontier CEO David Braben. “The average play time among our 1.4 million players is 60 hours – that’s a massive 84 million player hours and counting.” He then promised that the studio has some very ”long-term ambition” and players can expect more Horizons content ”very soon”.
