Half-Life 2 answered the question of what happened to Barney Calhoun, the star of Half Life: Blue Shift, but it’s the fate of Half Life: Opposing Force’s protagonist Adrian Shepard that frustrated many fans of the series. While The G-Man employed Gordon Freeman, Shepard was basically put in limbo forever, never to be heard from again.
Indie developer Richard Seabrook is developing a Half-Life 2 expansion called Prospekt that finally reveals what happened to him. While the standalone expansion is not canon, it has been approved by Valve, so he’s allowed to use characters and models from the series.
Prospekt, which was approved on Steam Greenlight, takes place on Nova Prospekt, the dreaded prison used by the Carbine to process humans into zombie-like workers. During the time Freeman is trapped in the prison, Adrian Shepard is freed by the Vortigaunts to aid him. As with Opposing Force, he is once again never in contact with Freeman, relegated to working behind the scenes. The expansion also features a return to Xen, the otherworldly dimension that players either loved or hated in the original Half-Life.
The expansion is reportedly as large as Half-Life 2: Episode One and is due in February 2016. Gamers interested in pre-ordering Prospekt can visit the Steam Store page here.
