I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what Resident Evil 7 is, but I still don’t really know what it’s about. It’s a big budget take on first-person, indie-style horror, similar to what Silent Hills and its Playable Teaser were planning to offer. But how does it fit into the Resident Evil lore? Who do you play as? Thanks to the ESRB rating, there are a few small answers.
The Entertainment Software Ratings Board rates games for objectionable content in North America and publishes summaries to their website. Their summary for Resident Evil 7 reveals that you’ll take control of a man named Ethan searching for his missing wife in a derelict mansion. It also reveals that there is some significant combat in the game, featuring pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws.

The summary also includes some more graphic details, like somebody getting dismembered via chainsaw. The game also has a pretty deadly depiction of shovels, as one is used both to cut of a leg and to impale someone through the face. The dialog also features some profanity. Fun for the whole family!
Capcom’s done a solid job of keeping Resident Evil 7 under wraps, and these few details have just left me wanting to know more. The ESRB listing has already been removed from the site, which means that this tiny bit of info is a bit more than the company wanted to divulge. The game will release on January 24, 2017 for PC and consoles.
