It was the closing chapter to an era, a masterful entry in an already strong series, and the final goodbye from director Hideo Kojima before leaving Konami. Add to that pretty impressive list that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has now reached over 6 million units sold since its release.
Konami announced this impressive number in its latest earnings report. The game managed to break the 6 million mark in both retail copies and digital downloads as of December 31 2015. Comparatively to Metal Gear Solid 4: Gun of the Patriots which claimed to have sold 4 million units 5 months after release according to a Q2 earnings report from that 2008, this is a hugely significant increase.
Truthfully, this number is probably due in part to the wide availability of Metal Gear Solid 5 in comparison to previous entries. Where most of the other Metal Gear Solid games were PlayStation exclusive with an occasional spin-off, MGS 5 saw both physical and digital launch on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, a first for the last three systems. Even despite Kojima leaving Konami, Metal Gear Solid 5 stands unsullied as a pretty great game.
