Real Money Trading - or RMT - within big online games is nothing new. You can log into the most obscure MMO and see bot spam attempting to give you masses of in-game gold for a few dollars. But top World of Warcraft players following a similar business model have just had their accounts shut down - and it will happen again.
Admitting they've turned a blind eye to those selling hard content runs to other players for real-world cash, Blizzard have swung their mighty banhammer swift and true in a surprise warning shot to those actively engaging in such activity. Basically, they're saying it doesn't matter how much time or money you've put into the game, even those with the grip and influence of potentially being World First record holders don't get a free pass when it comes to extracting real money from players to offer an in-game service. It's a warning of the truest kind and goes to show Blizzard's strong stance on keeping World of Warcraft on a relatively fair playing field.
Either that, or they just really want people to earn their stripes. But we can understand that some players may feel what they do with their money is their decision to make.
