Paradox Interactive typically hosts an annual event for members of the press to converge on a single location and try out everything the group has up their sleeves. This year it opened to the public with just as much to share as before: like snatching up Jon Shafer for a new project.
Famed for his work on Civilization V over at Firaxis, Shafer has a fruitful history in the grand strategy genre. Of course, Paradox being Paradox couldn't let that talent go.
During the announcement on-stage in Stockholm, Sweden, Jon and Paradox CEO Fredrik Wesker joked about how Fred was relentless in his recruitment efforts for years with catch-up conversations usually leading to another push for Jon to join his team. Speaking of the announcement, Jon joked "I'm filling out my grand strategy bingo card".
It Might Be A While Before Shafer's Work Is Released. Why Not Pick A New Strategy Classic?
After leaving Firaxis back in 2013, Jon had a short stay at other rival strategy developer Stardock before seeking Kickstarter funding for his own project - At the Gates. Despite being fully funded, the project has yet to get much further causing some concern for backers now that they've learned of his plans to develop something new for his new employer. Details were scarce with neither Jon nor Paradox offering a hint as to what they're set to team up on.
According to NicheGamer Jon has had an illustrious career despite his relatively young age. Landing a programming internship with Firaxis at 19, he was appointed Lead Developer of Civilization V at 25. And yes, he's hiring!
