The latest story trailer for the eagerly awaited Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is here, and it reveals that developer Monolith are offering an interesting take on Shelob, the giant spider queen that Frodo and Sam encountered in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King movie. In the trailer, player characters Talion and Celebrimbor watch as as the spider becomes… a woman. A woman who can offer visions no less.
In Monolith’s take, Shelob is an “ancient spirit of darkness” rather than just a big black spider, who then takes on a female witch-y form to offer Talion a vision of the fall of Minas Ithil, the last human-held fortress in Mordor which - spoiler alert - actually does fall, becoming known as Minas Morgul.
There’s nothing in the books or movies that suggests Shelob previously had the ability to turn into a woman so Tolkien fans will probably be up in arms, but it’s certainly an interesting take on the franchise’s lore.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is the sequel to Monolith’s well-received Shadow of Mordor and will be out October 10, 2017.
