Square Enix today revealed that between shipped copies and digital sales of the PS4 and Steam versions, Nier: Automata has sold over two million copies. Excellent news for a great game we personally loved, but fans on PC aren't happy. Despite it being six months after release, Square Enix still have not delivered the promised patch to fix the PC version's many game-breaking issues. The game is now on sale and many gamers won't be able to play it without fan mods.
Our review of Nier Automata, complete with performance comments!
The Best (and most essential) Nier Automata mods!
Way back in March, when Nier: Automata came out on PC, it was celebrated but the PC port was derided as shoddy, with many issues. Square Enix promised a patch and said "we appreciate all your feedback and are investigating the issues that have been reported." The "white screen" issue reported by certain AMD and Nvidia owners was only fixed by graphics card updates, not a game patch, and anyone having issues with the game six months later are showing their anger on <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/717iq9/it_has_been_six_months_since_the_pc_version_of/>Reddit</a> and Steam, with reviews beginning to bomb. Most PC owners are convinced that no patch is coming.
These issues include:
- Poor performance, including dips in certain areas
- Fullscreen being bugged and causing the game to crash
- Not displaying the proper resolution
- Ignoring settings
- Crashing at certain points, many in the tutorial or prologue stage
- Random lock-ups at certain points
And many more. Fans have been releasing their own mods to fix things, but it seems that Square Enix might not bother. Which is disgusting. Even on sale, the game is still a high price, as is the DLC, but obviously not worth a patch to make the game run well. What a shame.
We were totally in love with Nier Automata when it came out in March, despite the issues. Josh called it an "Action-RPG that throws in enough twists and turns that leave you utterly compelled to play through it three or even four times to fully come to terms with. What is lacks in scale is made up for in its sense of style" and gave it a 9.0 score, putting it in the running for our Game of the Year... and if it wasn't for these issues, it might even have got it.
Have you been playing Nier: Automata on PC? Have you had any issues, and have you fixed them with fan patches? Are you angry at Square Enix for seemingly abandoning the PC version? Or is it perfect for you and you don't know what the fuss is about? Let us know in the comments!
