Quirky 3D platformer A Hat In Time has finally got a release date, as announced by their developer Gears For Breakfast: October 5. Not only that, but the developer also announced that the game will be getting full mod support at release, including through Steam Workshop. Gears For Breakfast, who come from a modding background, also showed off some official mods based on popular indie games they have created with full support of the original developers. These include mods based on Psychonauts 2, Freedom Planet 2, Hyper Light Drifter, Shovel Knight and more.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Risky Boots DLC from WayForward has a release date
All this was announced in a Kickstarter backer update. Only two of these official mods were directly shown off. The first turns main character Hat Kid's signature top hat (that gives the game its title) into Razputin's cap and goggles from Psychonauts and upcoming fellow crowdfunding platformer Psychonauts 2. The goggles will also unlock Raz's psychic powers, although Gears For Breakfast were coy about revealing which. They did say though that A Hat In Time is hugely influenced by Psychonauts so they were particularly happy to get this mod in the game.
The second mod revealed is Lilac's Headpiece from Freedom Planet 2, the sequel to the excellent Sonic the Hedgehog-inspired indie title, that allows Hat Kid to perform the Dragon Cyclone spin move from the game, with custom animations, effects and voice lines.

A Hat In Time has been in development since May 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign that 9,169 backers pledged $296,360 to. The team were greatly inspired by Psychonauts, Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, and Nintendo 64 Rare titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. They've been releasing constant updates to their Alpha and Beta builds since the Kickstarter ended so it's great to see the project finally reaching its final stop.
