Transparency is key these days, and the Rocket League team is delivering it more than anyone right now. In light of recent traffic spikes and other unexpected issues, Psyonix's CEO has put out a lengthy message detailing how they're attempting to tackle the game's unsatisfactory wait times.
We've all noticed them before - whether it was back when Rocket League launched almost two years ago or with each subsequent update. It's a finicky game. Heavily reliant on precise movements, timings and speed to get the drop on another player and dribble the ball around like a pro, the slightly lag spike can mean a world of different. And people have been noticing them more and more this year.
According to the letter, part of this issue arose after a 'free weekend' for the Xbox One version of the game. Though the 40% rise in concurrent players likely contributed to today's issues in some capacity, the team ordered in hardware servers to provide more reliable relief outside of its usual mix of Virtual Servers and Google Cloud services - which Psyonix distrust but have utilized in the past due to their rapid deployment rates during busy periods. Despite their efforts, the problems have begun to sprout yet again wth the latest Dropshot update; but it's all being looked into.
Rocket League Pro Tips - 5 Pointers To Play At Your Best
Noting how Psyonix is rapidly attempting to fill their ranks through their own Careers page to cope with the network infrastructure changes being made, the Psyonix CEO shed light on the fact that "there are empty servers for you to play on, but PsyNet isn’t putting you into the servers fast enough." Essentially meaning there's a multitude of problems caused one great mess at the minute, they're certainly working hard to fix it.
Virtual servers, bad ISP routing possibilities, Google Cloud outages and their own unsatisfactory PsyNet product is keeping Rocket League from being the stable, even playing-field it needs to be to properly function as a game of its kind. Psyonix know this, and they're trying their best to fix it. Expect a hotfix change in the very near future.
Like what they're doing? It's not the worst time to get involved with Rocket League despite its current issues. The new Dropshot mode is a ton of fun. Grab a copy here.
