Developer World’s Edge has announced that the next planned DLC for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition has now been canceled. First unveiled back in February 2024, it originally targeted a release later during the year.
That failed to materialize when, in October, it got delayed until an unspecified date. Yesterday’s announcement sealed the fate of the DLC that was potentially going to introduce the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Denmark as playable civilizations.
Age of Empries 3: Definitive Edition DLC Canceled
“Last year as part of the New Year New Age event we announced another DLC for Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. After serious consideration, this DLC has been canceled,” the developer wrote in a post on Steam before stressing that the decision “was not made lightly.
“While considering the inclusions for last year’s show, we wanted to ensure that Age III: DE players felt part of the franchise celebration as we know you have huge passion and love for the game. However, pushing to ensure that the game was included meant we announced content before it had been built, and we now feel that announcement was premature.”
The studio admits that the news is bound to be a “huge disappointment” for dedicated fans, especially since it follows a patch whose size and scope underwhelmed Age of Empries III: Definitive Edition’s dedicated fanbase.
While new civilizations might not be coming any time soon, World’s Edge will “continue to maintain servers, rotate civs through the free trial version, and provide Customer Support for any issues you may encounter whilst playing.”
Although there is no overt confirmation that this is absolutely the end of the road for post-launch content, the tone of the post, and the fact that the developer itself shone the spotlight on the game’s modding scene, doesn’t make us feel particularly hopeful.
AoE III: DE’s community, although still decently active, is much smaller than that of AoE II: DE, so perhaps in the current climate it makes more sense to redirect resources towards the more popular title.
Aside from revisiting a classic real-time strategy, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition also received four pieces of DLC that added new playable civilizations, expanding its roster beyond the size of the original release.
