Publisher and developer Frictional Games has announced that it will release the source code for acclaimed horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Both Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will go open source today, celebrating the original title’s 10th anniversary.
Much like the Command and Conquer source code, Amnesia’s will also be made available under the GPL v3 license.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent Open Source Code
“Modding has been a huge part of Amnesia,” said Creative Director Thomas Grip.
“For instance, over the years The Dark Descent has accumulated over a thousand mods and addons on ModDB. This flood of user content has been amazing to see, and we are extremely grateful for the whole community. It is time we give something back!” he continued.
Although it goes open source, Amnesia: The Dark Descent will still be available for purchase digitally and owned by Frictional Games.
It will be interesting to see how fans of the title – often hailed as one of the best horror games – will use the Amnesia source code given this newfound freedom.
Frictional Games is currently gearing up for the release of the next entry in the series, Amnesia: Rebirth, slated to launch on October 20.
