After nearly three years since its first early access in October 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 has finally launched on PC and exceeded the expectations of players, making the game truly worth the wait. Soon, PlayStation players will also be able to jump in and join the fun as Larian Studios’ masterpiece is coming to the platform on September 6, 2023.
But what about Xbox players? Does Baldur’s Gate 3 have a release date for Xbox Series X/S / Xbox One? Things are a little bit complicated for now, but here’s everything you need to know about the game’s availability on the Xbox platform.
Baldur's Gate 3 Xbox Release Date
According to Larian Studios’ CEO, Swen Vincke, Baldur’s Gate 3 will arrive “this year” on Xbox Series X|S. Although this probably won’t be anytime soon, we can assume we’ll see Baldur’s Gate 3 on the platform before the end of 2023.
He also confirmed that the studio found a solution allowing them to port the game to the console. This most likely refers to the fact that the game had technical issues during its development for Xbox. Michael Douse, Larian Studios’ director of publishing, mentioned that “the issue is getting split-screen working on the Series S.” in late July.
Without this feature, they cannot “release the game on the ecosystem.” In case you didn’t know, due to Xbox’s parity clause, games that run on the Series X must also be supported on the lower-end Series S.
As for an Xbox One release date, unfortunately, Larian Studios has confirmed that the game’s not coming to this past-generation platform. Based on an interview with Eurogamer, executive producer David Walgrave mentioned that there have been a lot of updates to the game’s engine, and it’s unclear if the console is actually capable of running the game.
Although the specific Xbox release date has yet to be mentioned, it’s confirmed that cross-save progression between Steam and Xbox Series will be available. This is good news for those wanting to switch to one of these platforms.
