Baldur’s Gate 3 cross-platform mod support is officially in the works and could launch later in 2024, developer Larian Studios has announced.
The news dropped as hotfix 19 went live, rendering certain mods incompatible until their creators get around to deploying updates of their own.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Platform Mod Support
“We generally don’t talk about things til they’re ready, but as you may have read, we’re making an exception,” Director of Publishing Michael Douse wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We’ve been working on a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year. We love our modding community and we want to support them. It’s coming.”
The developer has already made headway towards developing a system but it “needs to be tested and still requires work.” Douse also acknowledged mods frequently becoming incompatible as a major pain point that BG3 cross-platform mod support aims to address.
The developer aims to start communicating with modders as work continues, pointing at its Discord server as the best place to stay updated on the matter.
Over there, Senior Community Strategist WombatMedic delved deeper into the matter.
“We absolutely love that we have such an active modding community across our titles, and have enjoyed seeing that passion grow even stronger with Baldur’s Gate 3,” she wrote.
“We want to continue making sure you’re getting the best possible experience, which is why we frequently patch the game, although this does inevitably mean that each new patch or hotfix has the potential to become incompatible with your favourite mods.
“We know this sucks, we know you want to play with mods, and we want to make this right.”
Larian Studios has been working on official mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 “for a while,” one of its goals being “establishing a pipeline that lets mod authors release their mods across different platforms.
“Together with the platform holders, we are working on making this a reality, and are forming a team to support mod curation. We’re aiming to offer modding support for things like classes, UI, customisation, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics.”
The developer hopes to introduce “the initial stages of modding support in our next big patch, which is still several months away.”
Baldur Gate 3 already has a strong modding community that has done great work even without official tools.
Once they’re deployed, they should, hopefully, pave the way for more ambitious projects that allow for greater customization, like making it feasible for modders to develop new campaigns.
