Publisher 2K and developer Firaxis have detailed Civilization 6’s upcoming Pirates multiplayer scenario, revealing more about its factions and how it plays.
Channeling the spirit of Sid Meier’s Pirates!, the newest Civilization 6 scenario supports up to four players. Fighting, finding treasure and gaining infamy all contribute to your score, which ultimately determines the victor.
Playable on a handcrafted map or using a randomized map script, the Pirates scenario also features the British, Spanish, French, and Dutch civilizations as established forces controlled by the AI.
Civilization 6 Free Pirates Multiplayer Scenario Detailed
The Civilization 6 Pirates multiplayer scenario spans 60 turns and lets players choose from four unique factions, each with its own playstyle and abilities.
As a Dread Pirate, your active ability – Walk the Plank – instantly sinks an enemy ship that’s already received a good beating. Using it also increases your combat strength and movement speed. Fightin’ is what we do best, the faction’s passive ability, gives players additional gold whenever one of their units enters combat.
Having the backing of a government patron from one of the four non-playable civilizations, the Privateer faction’s active ability – Bring Her Home – adds a badly damaged enemy ship to their patron’s fleet while rewarding them with gold and infamy. Letter of Marque – their passive ability – reveals all ports belonging to their patron while increasing the gold gained from pillaging trade routes.
The Pirates scenario’s Swashbuckler’s faction is all about exploration. Where their active ability Tack Into the Wind provides a high but temporary movement boost, their passive – Sailing the Open Seas – grants infamy for uncovering hexes on the map.
Lastly, the Hoarder’s active Chain Shot ability renders enemy units temporarily stuck in place. Mine! Mine! Mine! – their passive – reduces the cost of unit maintenance, grants extra points when burying treasure, and awards interest on the faction’s reserves of gold.
The four AI-controlled civilizations in the Pirates scenario will hunt your ships down, however, their trade routes are clearly marked, highlighting vulnerable trade ships.
Bigger treasure fleets also leave a random port every few turns. Getting past their guards and pillaging gold ships grants bonus treasure points and, entirely unexpectedly, lots of gold.
The Civilization VI Pirates scenario isn’t missing its own take on Barbarians, either. Called Buccaneers, their camps are good pillaging targets.
You can also go against stronger infamous pirates, receiving infamy as you send them to the bottom of the sea.
Players can also dock at ports, where they can add members to their crew, find treasure maps and powerful relics that grant unique buffs.
Civilization VI’s Pirates scenario will let players sail, plunder, and pillage as early as tomorrow, October 22, when the game’s free monthly update goes live.
