Civilization VI: Gathering Storm's second officially confirmed new civ is the Maori, led by the legendary figure of Kupe, the original navigator, founder, and settler of New Zealand.
Civilization VI Maori Civ is going to differ a fair bit from the previously-revealed Hungarian Civ in more ways than just superficial aesthetics, since the Maori will require a bit of dedication to water, be it for travel, war, or infrastructure.
In accordance with the Maori legend of Kupe, his unique ability will be Kupe's Voyage, and will provide his people with an early game that's a bit different from what we're used to in Civilization VI. Namely, Maori will begin any given match in the middle of the sea, and will receive both Science and Culture for every turn prior to finally founding their Capital.
Of course, this also means that Maori will begin with Sailing and Shipbuilding technologies from the very start, which is the effect of their Mana ability. Furthermore, once the Maori settle, they will get a free Builder unit and other assorted bonuses to Housing and Amenities, as well as Population.
Maori's unique unit will be the fort-building Toa, while their unique building will be the Marae: a replacement for the Amphitheater. There's even more nuance to the Maori in practical gameplay, though we'll have to wait until 14th of February to see how it all meshes together.
