Almost eight years after the release of Civilization 6, Sid Meier’s long-running 4X strategy game series is back with Civilization 7. That said, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to play one more turn.
A stunning CG reveal trailer arrived during the Summer Game Fest 2024 showcase, and while it didn’t unveil any in-game footage of the turn-based behemoth, longtime fans of the franchise and casual 4X players alike are excited for another big AAA release from Firaxis.
Civilization 7 Release Date
Civilization 7 is expected to be released on the 11th of February, 2025, with 2K and Firaxis confirming PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch. This marks the very first time a Civilization game is launching on consoles alongside PC from the get-go. For now, you can wishlist it on Steam.
The Deluxe Edition will give you access 5 days earlier, according to well-known leaker billbil-kun.
Pricing:
- Standard: $69.99 on PS5 / Xbox ($59.99 on Nintendo Switch
- Deluxe: $99.99 on PS5 / Xbox ($89.99 on Nintendo Switch)
Civilization 7 Gameplay
We’ve yet to learn about the (surely) many gameplay innovations being added and the refreshed visual style that Civilization 7 will use. Of course, longtime fans of the series know that Civilization and other 4X games trying to replicate its bulletproof formula are all about exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating. None of these aspects are 100% obligatory, which is what makes these games so enticing. It’s up to the player to decide how to develop their civilization and (try to) reach victory over other countries and empires, and that takes many many turns.
It remains to be seen whether Firaxis is doubling down on some of the late-game ideas introduced in the post-launch content and updates that have come to Civilization 6 over the years. That said, it’s reasonable to expect more depth and accessibility options while retaining what makes Civilization special. This will be no easy task for sure, especially as more and more competitors, such as Humankind, crop up and surprise 4X fanatics with refreshing ideas and systems. Civilization remains king for now, but it needs to evolve as well in order not to lose strength.
You can find Civilization 7 on Steam. There has been no information yet on crossplay or the multiplayer modes that will be available in this edition of the series.
