Dark Mass is a new deep-sea survival horror from Insomnis developer Path Games. Announced during the Future Games Show, this sea-faring horror is shaping up to be something quite suitable for any horror fan’s wishlist. Especially if they’re coming off the back of last year’s Still Wakes The Deep.
Set entirely underwater, Dark Mass puts you in the role of diver Alice. Following a catastrophic event during a dive, Alice discovers a sunken manor found at the bottom of the ocean. Trapped in this hellish nightmare, she must find a way to escape the terror lurking within while also ensuring she doesn’t run out of oxygen.
The trailer doesn’t give too much else away, but it does reveal that there are enemies that can pursue and attack Alice during the game. While avoiding the ever-present danger of these threats will be a core part of Dark Mass’ survival, it’ll also have you solving puzzles and exploring the environment to escape.
There’s also a Firewatch-style dialogue system where Alice will talk with her brother at various points via a walkie-talkie system. It’s these interactions that drive the narrative core of the game, and these sequences will let you choose different dialogue options.
Make sure you choose wisely because certain choices affect the outcome of the story and may lead to an unsavory ending. With an estimated play time of around 4-6 hours, it sounds like the perfect length for horror fans who want a good scare without the pacing overstaying its welcome. And with multiple endings and narrative branches to discover, there’ll be plenty of reasons to revisit it.
Dark Mass is scheduled to release next year, with Path Games giving a rough date of Fall 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. So be sure to clear your Halloween calendar to accommodate it.
