Publisher Deep Silver today unveiled a meaty slice of Dead Island 2 gameplay in an extended trailer that has everything from brutal combat seasoned with plenty of gory dismemberment to massive sledgehammers, guns, and a hulking zombie bride who’s not that fond of cake.
Dead Island 2’s extended gameplay trailer starts with an early gameplay sequence, featuring Dani, one of several playable characters called slayers. A foul-mouthed brawler from Ireland, she is “tenacious yet balanced,” fitting a more agile style of combat that revolves around mobility, dodging, and finding the right moment to strike.
Dead Island 2 Extended Gameplay Trailer
Each slayer has a different personality, stats, and starting abilities, but Dead Island 2’s flexible skill system lets you customize their fighting style.
Later in the trailer, the right combination of skill cards – which you can swap in and out – turns Dani into a character who’s resistant to close-quarters hits and able to dish out heavy but slow damage using a sledgehammer.
Dead Island 2’s impressive dismemberment technology is at the forefront during the whole 14 minutes. Aside from providing a gruesome visual feast, it also enables players to target zombie weak points, like shooting the knee of an electrified enemy to separate that leg from its body.
The title features a large variety of weapons, from hammers, to katanas, machetes, electrified dual claws, pistols, and beyond.
Naturally, melee weaponry is great when you want to get up close and personal. Guns are best used to keep enemies at a distance, blow up several undead using explosives, or shoot thrown canisters to create a fiery puddle under oblivious targets.
Slayers can also tap into their corrupted DNA and unleash fury mode, granting them powers similar to the infected for a short while.
Just like there’s a variety of weapons to use, you’ll encounter a plethora of zombies, ranging from simple shamblers, burning runners, and a very angry, hulking zombie bride that briefly shows up.
Mutations further increase the pools of enemies you can face, while apex infected provide the highest level of challenge, thanks to their unique powers and abilities.
Dead Island 2’s open world might be full of zombies, but you’ll also encounter survivors eager to offer you side quests.
While exploring, you’ll also find workbenches that allow you to retrofit weapons with DIY perks that enable your katana to deal fire damage or your sledgehammer to have a rather explosive flourish when meeting the skulls of foes.
Perhaps most importantly, Dead Island 2’s extended gameplay trailer is another reminder that the first-person action has, indeed, dug itself out of the grave. It is currently set to shamble onto our screen on April 21, when it arrives on PC, via the Epic Game Store, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4.
