Where can you find the Death Stranding Companion Cube locations? What are the Half-Life items unlocked by finding each of them?
The Death Stranding Half-Life crossover was known to be part of the PC version from its announcement. Now, with Hideo Kojima’s latest title having arrived on PC, players can set off in search of Portal Companion Cubes and receive Half-Life-themed item rewards upon retrieving them.
Here are all the Half-Life Cube locations alongside all the rewards you can get for completing their associated quests.
Death Stranding Portal Companion Cube Locations and Half-Life Items
The Death Stranding Half-Life crossover involves six side missions that send you to different locations in the world to retrieve Portal Companion Cubes.
These missions are sent to you by email. You’ll know you’ve received one if, upon opening your in-game email, you spot a new entry in yellow text and whose subject line features the Lambda symbol prominently used throughout Half-Life games.
These emails include hints as to where the various Death Stranding Companion Cube locations can be found, although, to make unlocking Half-Life items easier, we’ve listed them and their rewards below.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 1
The first mission that sends you looking for Death Stranding Half-Life Cube locations pops up in Chapter 2. After you complete the Wind Farm delivery, you’ll receive an e-mail titled “I Want You to Look for Some Lost Cargo” from one Benjamin H, tasking you with, you guessed it, finding some lost cargo.
To find the first Death Stranding Companion Cube location, head to the Distribution Center west of Capital Knot City, then follow the river outside of the center heading north. You’ll find the Cube on the riverbank near some rocks. Scanning your surroundings can make finding all cubes easier.
Returning the Companion Cube to the Distribution Center West of Capital Knot City will reward you the first Death Stranding Half-Life Item: Gordon’s glasses. They’re a purely cosmetic addition.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 2
You’ll receive the second email that sends you looking for Portal Companion Cubes in Chapter 3. More specifically, you’ll need to reach the second map and complete the deliveries for the Craftsman. That’s when you’ll get another email with the Lambda symbol.
The second Death Stranding Companion Cube location is found next to Peter Englert’s place, found west of Lake Knot City. You can find the cube near to two water towers.
Returning it to Lake Knot City rewards you the Valve, another purely cosmetic addition that you can place on the back of Sam’s head to resemble an image familiar to anyone who’s played Valve games.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 3
The third email also arrives in Chapter 3, after you complete the delivery to the Timefall Farm. This time around, you’ll need to track down the location of a Death Stranding Half-Life Cube stolen by MULEs.
You’ll find it in a tent area at the back of a MULE camp to the northwest of Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City, although it’s worth keeping in mind that bandits are guarding it. It’s best to tap into your stealth persona to retrieve it.
Bringing the cargo back to the Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City rewards you the Gravity Glove from Half-Life: Alyx. This Death Stranding Half-Life item actually has gameplay benefits, letting you pull items towards you from a distance.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 4
The fourth and final Death Stranding Half-Life mission taking place in Chapter 3 is received after dealing with the Junk Dealer near the tar lake.
You’ll find the fourth Death Stranding Half-Life Cube location in a factory to the northeast of the Craftsman. Sadly, it’s chock-full of BTs, making patience key to retrieving the cargo that’s found around the center of the area.
Return the Companion Cube to the Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City and you’ll get a truck with the Half-Life Lambda symbol on it. While it looks pretty awesome, it’s also better at managing its energy and takes less Timefall damage.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 5
After Chapter 3, you’ll get a bit of a break before having to embark on another search for a Death Stranding Portal Companion Cube location, as the next mission waits for you in Chapter 8.
The email bearing the Lambda symbol arrives after getting the Paleontologist on the Chiral Network. The fifth Death Stranding Companion Cube location is found in a ruin in the mountains to the south from Heartman’s Lab.
You’ll find PTs inside but, after you retrieve the cargo and take it back to bunker S41-22, you’ll be rewarded the fifth Death Stranding Half-Life item: the Headcrab hat. Aside from being the ultimate fashion statement and pinnacle of aesthetics, wearing it on your head also lets you restore stamina at the cost of blood.
Death Stranding Half-Life Mission 6
The Death Stranding Half-Life crossover concludes with a sixth mission found in Chapter 15. The email will send you to a spot near the Middle Knot City crater. The Death Stranding Portal Companion Cube location is found inside a small ruin filled with all sorts of BTs.
It’s a difficult encounter, but retrieving the cube, then bringing it to an incinerator station to the west rewards you the final Half-Life item in Death Stranding: a hologram of the Strider found in Half-Life: Alyx.
Here is a short recap of all the Death Stranding Half-Life item rewards:
- Mission 1 - Gordon Freeman glasses
- Mission 2 - The Valve valve
- Mission 3 - Gravity Glove
- Mission 4 - Half-Life truck
- Mission 5 - Headcrab hat
- Mission 6 - Strider hologram
