One of Dune: Awakening’s in-game radio stations will include music from two classic 90s games based on Frank Herbert’s universe, publisher and developer Funcom has confirmed today. Although the highly-anticipated multiplayer survival game seems to have its sights set on the future and pushing forward its genre, it still serves a welcome dose of nostalgia to any fans who’ve already visited Arrakis.
While exploring its expansive desert planet, we can listen to both the The Dune: Spice Opera soundtrack – featured in Cryo Entertainment’s Dune (1992) and composed by Philippe Ulrich and Stéphane Picq – as well as Frank Klepacki’s tracks featured in Westwood Studios’ Dune II: Battle for Arrakis, released during the same year. The former was remastered in 2024.
Dune: Awakening In-Game Radio Station Classic 90’s Games Music
Dune: Awakening’s Communinet gives us three channels to choose from “alongside broadcasts about emergencies, sandstorms or the Landsraad,” according to the publisher.
Both the Atreides and Harkonnen houses have official channels that help spread propaganda, arena fight coverage, and motivational speeches.
If you’re not really in the mood or feel that your fervor is already topped up, Harvester Radio is “the station for spice miners and the commoner workforce, broadcasting ads, survival tips, music and entertainment, like episodes of exclusive radio theatre.”
I didn’t expect Dune: Awakening’s radio stations to include music from 1992’s Dune games, yet this small infusion of nostalgia definitely helps add even more variety to a game that already promises a wealth of options.
Funcom hasn’t shared exact details of how much content the in-game radio stations will feature, but three channels should be enough to spice up our time discovering Arrakis while dodging sandworms, searching for a certain valuable mineral, and building our very own fortress.
“Dune has a legacy in books and films – but also in video games.” says Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos. “The soundtracks of Dune and Dune II were some of the greatest of the 90’s and it is a great honor to be able to share them with a new generation of players through the Communinet in Dune: Awakening.”
Dune: Awakening launches for all PC players on May 20, 2025, but owners of certain editions get 5 days’ worth of advanced access. Nvidia DLSS4 support is confirmed for launch, while its console editions remain in development.
