Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer FromSoftware today confirmed that highly acclaimed action-RPG Elden Ring has an expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree in development.
Shadow of the Erdtree’s announcement comes less than a week after the publisher revealed that the base game has sold a whopping 20 million copies during its first year.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion
“Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for #ELDENRING Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development,” reads a tweet from the game’s official Twitter account. “We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between.”
Unfortunately, that’s all we know about the expansion at this point in time, as the publisher has yet to bring up any other details about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s gameplay, story, or when we might get our hands on it.
It remains to be seen whether this “new path” players have to follow pushes things forward narratively or explores a different part and period of the Lands Between.
Although it’s been kept under wraps quite well until now, the news of an upcoming Elden Ring expansion isn’t too surprising.
The game had massive amounts of hype surrounding it well before launch, received positive ratings from both critics and players, while managing to retain a healthy playerbase one year after its launch.
In our review, James Bentley noted that “over 100 hours later and two playthroughs, all I want is to discover more of what Elden Ring has in store for me,” before giving the game a (very rare) perfect score.
More details about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will likely be shared over the course of the coming months. In addition to the expansion, FromSoftware has also announced that it is working on Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon.
