Upon reaching Evil Genius 2’s mid-game, your scientists’ research momentum suddenly disappears into the ether. Up until this point, you were constantly unlocking new traps and upgrades for your minions and henchmen, only to now find Tier 3 Research locked behind main story progress.
Getting to unlock Tier 3 Research in Evil Genius 2 can feel like a bit of a slog and you never really know how far you are from doing so. Since main story quests use the same resources as side stories, this can put you in a rather frustrating scenario, where you have to wait around for Schemes to complete and Heat to die down.
The only way to get past it, however, is to persevere and slowly chip away at main quests while managing Heat and expenses as best you can. To unlock Tier 3 Research options in Evil Genius 2, you’ll need to progress just past the point of getting your second Doomsday Weapon upgrade.
In our campaign as Emma, this happened after investigating six signs tied to John Steele’s presence on the world map. This is done exclusively through Schemes in various regions that also require new minion types like the Martial Artist.
After that’s complete, you’ll get three more side stories that let you pursue new minion types. Selecting the green side story will see you chasing the Biologist, whose valuable knowledge will finally give you access to Tier 3 Research options.
The process to unlock the Biologist is identical to that of all the other minions, beginning with kidnapping one on the world map through a special Scheme.
Shortly after, they’ll arrive at your base, automatically being led to a free holding cell, provided you have one available. Interrogate the Biologist at an Interrogation Chair, build a Biologist Trainer in the Training Room, and recruit one to complete the quest.
Immediately after, you’ll have access to the Organic Samples and Centrifuge items for your Laboratory and, more importantly, Evil Genius 2’s Tier 3 Research options.
These include Advanced Mining Techniques (in the Lair tab) that lets you mine through tougher stone and use more of the available building space in your lair alongside other useful upgrades.
