The former lead designer of Wipeout and other team members from Psygnosis are joining forces to establish a new studio, Starlight Games, in Liverpool, the original home of Psygnosis. This new studio aims to focus on creating new IPs using Unreal Engine 5.
The team at Starlight Games includes co-creator of WipEout, Nick Burcombe, serving as Design Director and Producer; Andy Santos, who co-created Skate, directed Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and more recently worked on Horizon: Call of the Mountain; and Ben Cronin, Production Director, who was a founding team member at Gamesys, the company behind Jackpotjoy.
“Our vision is to foster a creative ecosystem where talent can flourish and dreams can be turned into reality,” said Gary Nichols, Founder of Starlight Games.
“We want to provide the platform and resources for young talent to thrive and leave a lasting impact on the industry.”
What games does Starlight Games have in the pipeline?
Three Games are being developed at Starlight Games, with the first due out later this year. House of Golf 2 is due to be released on the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in Summer 2024.
You may remember the original House of Golf on Nintendo Switch, which was released in 2019 and was developed by Atomicom.
House of Golf 2 is a sequel to the successful HOUSE OF GOLF released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. The new game is developed with Unreal 5, and it takes the fun approach of mini-golf and brings it into the home with over 100 incredible courses, gorgeous visuals, weekly tournaments, and many crazy ways to play. With many of its unique and tricky challenges designed by one of the company’s young and passionate game designers who joined the studio after graduating from a local university. The game also features couch-based 4-player multiplayer and is coming in the summer.
A new futuristic sports title is currently being developed under the guidance of WipEout co-creator Nick Burcombe. A brief teaser of this project is featured in the announcement trailer provided below.
The third title it mentioned is a strategy sci-fi rogue-lite action game, which Starlight Games says it will be revealing soon.
All three titles will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.
The studio is committed to nurturing young local talent and providing them with experience in the video game industry. This young talent will be designing and creating Fortnite projects, the first of which is Jungle Jam, launching at the end of April 2024.
Sony shut down Psygnosis back in 2012, and there were rumours at the time that the studio was working on two PlayStation 4 launch titles, one was meant to be a Wipeout title but drastically different, while the other was a game like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.
