With upcoming god game Fata Deum, publisher and developer 42 Bits Entertainment aims to wake the once-popular subgenre from its slumber. Drawing inspiration from classics such as Black & White, the title puts us in the role of a young deity looking to make a name for themselves.
Powerful as we might be, a god is nothing without followers, which is why we’ll need to manage our mana reserves to “manipulate […] settlements, devotees and the fabric of reality itself.”
God Game Fata Deum
As our influence grows, so does our pool of available powers. Furthermore, the kind of god we choose to be in Fata Deum also determines how our followers behave and react to our actions.
A benevolent deity that respects their followers’ free will might rule over lush fields and towering mountain peaks bathed in light. A tyrant treating their followers as mere resources to be sacrificed to summon demonic armies will end up spreading darkness across the land.
Whether we choose to convince others to follow us peacefully or through conquest, we’ll inevitably face other deities looking to spread their own influence in Fata Deum. These include gods of Violence, Deceit, Fertility, and Pleasure, each with different tricks up their sleeve.
Developer 42 Bits Entertainment has been periodically sharing updates on how development progresses, highlighting features such as free building, advanced physics or reaction systems, and more.
One interesting tidbit is how damaging resources found on the game’s maps allows us to pick up throwable items like stones, which we can then use to damage buildings and crush puny mortals.
Although they probably don’t have the same ring as the thunderbolts we can chuck at our opponents, extra tools to cause mayhem never hurt anyone (aside from those on the receiving end, that is).
As of March 2025, the studio is focusing exclusively on polishing Fata Deum before it officially launches later in 2025.
Alongside the god game subgenre’s return to the stage, the year also has multiple strategy games in store for those of us who fancy isometric perspectives alongside base and army management.
