Icarus’ has all the elements you’d expect from a survival game, from harsh environments to crafting and deadly beasts. It also offers a bit more guidance, featuring missions that come with a set of objectives. The first one you’ll have to complete, involves recon work in a forest zone, its location being suitable for a tutorial-style level that helps you learn a handful of vital interactons.
Although Icarus’ missions do point you in a certain direction, the game doesn’t exactly hold your hand. Completing its Recon: Forest Zone objective might seem a little vague, especially if this is your first time playing survival games. Thankfully, the location around your landing craft has everything that you need. Read on below to learn how to beat the mission.
Icarus’ Recon: Forest Zone objective comes with three tasks meant to accustom you to some of the title’s core mechanics. To complete it, you’ll need to hunt, gather, and craft items, but also level up, and build a shelter and a bedroll.
You won’t need to venture too far outside your starting location and it’s best to start by grabbing stone, sticks, and fiber. These materials can be easily picked up from the ground by holding the F key and simply walking around.
Once you have enough for a pickaxe and an axe, craft them and get to chopping down trees and mining rocks. These activities should be enough for you to level up at least once, completing the second task and teaching you how gathering and crafting works.
As far as hunting goes, you should find deer and wolves nearby, but you might have to walk a couple of steps away from camp before you spot them. Make sure to have one or more spears at the ready.
Deer are trickier to kill because they run away from you even if you crouch and use stealth to approach them. At the same time, they can be good practice for your throwing arm, as pressing and holding the right mouse button turns the spear into a ranged projectile.
Killing wolves is quicker but they can swarm you if you’re not careful. The key is to use your spear as a melee weapon, aim for the head, and do your best to dodge their attacks. Don’t forget to unlock the stone knife blueprint, craft it, and use it to skin the animals. You may need their fur to craft the bedroll.
The third task required to complete Icarus’ Recon: Forest Zone objective is a bit inconsistent at launch. We never had to build a bedroll and finished it after placing down a couple of pieces of thatch floor that are, nonetheless, part of the very first shelter you can build.
We also crafted the campfire prior to them, but couldn’t say if it plays into completing the mission. Regardless, once you’re done with all three tasks, you can leave the location by interacting with your landing craft.
That’s what you need to know about Icarus’ Recon: Forest Zone objective alongside the location you need to roam across in order to complete it.
