Crafting in Icarus requires collecting a number of different resources and tracking the methods to obtain them can get a bit overwhelming. As you move past the early game, you’ll need to get your hands on Steel Ingots, but may have trouble finding their associated ore.
Since you’ve likely mined quite a bit of iron ore prior to this point, it’s natural to expect to find Steel Ore locations while exploring the planet. From what we can tell, that isn’t the case and obtaining Steel Ingots in Icarus requires that you put in quite a bit of extra work.
In the absence of Steel Ore locations through which you can wreak havoc with your trusty pickaxe, you’ll need to turn your attention towards a handful of crafting stations.
To begin with, you’ll want to make sure you’ve unlocked the Mortar & Pestle, which is part of the Tier 2 Tech Tree that unlocks once your character reaches level 10. It allows you to craft Steel Bloom using iron ore and coal.
Steel Bloom itself is required to create Steel Ingots in Icarus, although you likely won’t be able to do so right away. To actually smelt the ingots, you’ll first need to reach the third tier of your Tech Tree, which unlocks when your character arrives at level 20.
After you unlock the Machining Bench, which is the first item in the Tier 3 tree, you’ll then need to prioritize getting access to the Cement Mixer and, later, the Concrete Furnace.
Once you’ve unlocked and built a Concrete Furnace you can smelt one piece of Steel Bloom to create one Steel Ingot. This opens up the way to building new items which should make surviving a bit easier.
