We could be in the middle of a huge RTS renaissance, and games like Crown of Greed have more than a couple of ideas to create a new path forward for the dusty genre. Now, we all have the perfect opportunity to check it out and help the devs work on it ahead of a Q2 2025 launch. If you’re interested in closed playtests, read on below.
Via an official press release, we’ve learned that Crown of Greed will be running closed playtests starting on December 4, and all you need to do to have a chance to participate is to head to the game’s Steam page and request access. Mind you, this isn’t guaranteed admittance, but with several playtests happening in December, we’re expecting a decent volume of players making their way into Rodovia.
This mystical realm must be guided “through cunning leadership and alliances,” mainly because the twist to this RTS is that the player isn’t in direct control of neither heroes nor other NPCs. They “operate with free will and advanced AI,” limiting control over them to “incentives, contracts, or even bribes.” It’s also been promised that each run plays out differently since heroes have randomized traits and whatnot.
As for the act of building and managing a kingdom, that’s where Crown of Greed seems more traditional, with upgradeable buildings and economic facilities of all sorts turning this fantasy strategy game into a pretty good-looking town builder, long campaign mode included, that we can’t wait to play for ourselves.
The world of Rodovia is inspired by “European medieval folk culture and mythology,” and the main idea is that the “independent heroes” will either save or doom the entire land. It’s an enticing pitch, especially for those players who don’t enjoy all the micromanaging that often comes with RTS titles. Moreover, Crown of Greed is being described as a purely single-player experience, so no pressure if you don’t get everything right on your first try.
