Larian Studios has confirmed that it is developing two new projects, separate from the Baldur’s Gate franchise. The studio has confirmed that it will not be creating Baldur’s Gate 4 or adding any new narrative content to the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, including its origin characters and companions.
These upcoming projects will feature completely original intellectual properties. “I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever,” says Swen Vincke, Founder and CEO of Larian Studios. After the incredible work it did with Baldur’s Gate 3, and all the awards it won, we’re inclined to believe.
Divinity: Original Sin 3 or perhaps something entirely new - why not both?
Hey, it’s entirely possible that Divinity: Original Sin 3 could be on the cards, but Larian Studios isn’t spilling the beans any time soon.
“I don’t know if we’re going to pull it off, but looking at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever.” said Vincke.
“I get excited like a kid watching the key imagery, want to show it to everyone now and grumble in frustration at having to wait until it’s actually all working. Yes, it’s hype but it’s hype because it really looks and feels good.” Vincke concluded. You could almost feel his excitement about the prospect of revealing it to the public even though it was just written words from an update about its next patch for Baldur’s Gate 3.
The team says that it’s “fueled by the very same fire in our bellies, one that drives us to create immersive experiences shaped by your choices, and we can’t wait for you to join us on this next adventure.”
During GDC 2024, it was confirmed that there would be no expansion packs or narrative-based content developed for Baldur’s Gate 3, nor would there be any further games in the franchise. The studio has decided to conclude its work on Baldur’s Gate for the time being. Hasbro does, however, intend to continue the Baldur’s Gate series, so another studio will likely take over the franchise in the future. when the time is right “We certainly hope that it’s not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur’s Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we’re going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate.” it said.
The team is riding high after the BAFTA Games Awards 2024. Whatever these projects end up being, we will be waiting and can’t wait to learn more about them once Larian is ready to share more details.
