Veteran Finnish game studio Kuuasema has announced Cthulhu Keeper, a Lovecraftian take on the dungeon-keeping and real-time tactics subgenres.
As real-time strategy games continue to arrive from small and mid-sized studios, the dungeon-keeping subgenre has seen a particularly interesting resurgence in recent times, with sequels like Dungeons 4 bringing back old, dormant magic and all-new releases putting their own spin on the tried-and-tested formula.
Cthulhu Keeper promises “a darkly humorous and challenging strategy game inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft,” which is an enticing premise by itself. However, the developers are also teasing a deeper gameplay loop that goes beyond managing a cult, gathering resources, and creating the perfect evil lair. The first screenshots and trailer (which you can watch below) already show off much more than you’d expect at first.
“We’ve poured our hearts and dark souls into creating a unique and challenging experience that blends classic dungeon-keeping with the unsettling atmosphere of Lovecraft’s stories,” said Kimmo Kari, Chief Gaming Officer at Kuuasema. According to the press release, a console launch is being considered, but the focus is on the PC version for now.
On top of the aforementioned elements and some impressive customization and progression systems, the very first trailer shows off a distinct art style that leans heavily on comic book influences, giving the whole project an extra spark.
Via Kuuasema, these are the key features players can expect when the game releases:
- Build Your Cult: Carve out a monstrous lair, research forbidden tomes, and summon a menagerie of Lovecraftian horrors.
- Gather Resources: Collect flesh, valuable artifacts, and clay tablets to fuel your research and expansion.
- Spread the Madness: Explore the city streets, recruit cultists, and complete objectives to expand your influence.
- Defend Your Domain: Fortify your lair with traps and spells to repel rival cults and the ever-inquisitive authorities.
Further details are being kept buried deep in the soil, but the studio is promising that a playtest will happen soon, so keep an eye on the Steam page.
