Marvel Rivals, NetEase’s hero shooter based on the legendary comic book universe, has finally been opened to the public on PC and current-gen consoles. With a meaty launch roster of playable characters and a Season 0 battle pass that’s teasing the potential of the games’ upcoming cosmetics, it seems that this might be one of the most successful live service launches of 2024.
Seasons in Marvel Rivals will work like in other shooters. Brand-new playable content like characters, maps, and modes will arrive regularly at no extra cost alongside battle passes offering new cosmetics (and not just skins). While some items will be free for everyone and there’s a currency that’s earned through regular play, it looks like the shiniest cosmetics will be limited to the premium passes. Still, keep an eye out for special events!
More importantly, battle passes won’t expire when each season ends; this means they can be completed whenever you want and without external pressure (unless you really really want that one skin). This is a bold decision that’s paid off for games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but isn’t widespread. Thankfully, NetEase and Marvel Games’ hero shooter seems to be focused on fixing many of the current live service woes that some gamers have grown to hate.
Marvel Rivals Season 1 Release Date
Marvel Rivals’ first proper season, which arrives after Season 0: Dooms’ Rise, isn’t expected to drop until early 2025, but is there a more specific release window/date?
- Marvel Rivals Season 1 is expected to start in January 2025.
During a recent ‘Dev Vision’ video uploaded to the game’s official YouTube channel, creative director Guangguang teased that Season 1 could begin in January 2025, right after Season 0’s end on January 10. That said, it remains to be seen whether Season 1 will arrive right after Season 0 or there’s a small ‘downtime’ gap planned. We’ll keep this article updated with the latest on this matter.
Marvel Rivals Season 1 details
Marvel Rivals’ regular seasons are said to last around 13 weeks, so that means we’ll be seeing roughly four seasons per year. As we’ve already seen, the new skins will be based on both comic book appearances and MCU designs, with all-original skins also feeling right due to the game’s multiversal approach to its seasonal storytelling.
At this point, we don’t know what the theme for Season 1 will be yet, so be sure to check back in early January to get the full details. We’re expecting to hit the ground fast in 2025 with an update from NetEase and Marvel before Season 0 ends.
