Millennia failed to become a truly worthy competitor to the 4X strategy behemoth that is Civilization 6, but its developers C Prompt Games has been working hard to make improvements and with the future looking brighter, the game is certainly looking less undercooked now.
The first expansion, “Ancient Worlds,” is set for release on August 12th and will be priced at $9.99, £8.49, and €9.99. It will also be included in the Millennia Expansion Pass.
“Choose a new beginning for humanity, living off the land and finding the perfect place to start the story of society in Millennia: Ancient Worlds” says Paradox Interactive in a press release sent to us this evening, Millennia’s publisher.
Ancient Worlds will add even more new content following a series of patches and updates since its release in March that have helped improve the problems players have been critical of. So far, four major updates have been released this year, and C Prompt Games plans to release two more alongside this expansion and the forthcoming “Atomic Ambitions” DLC.
More of C Prompt Games plans are listed in the 2024 Roadmap.
We said in our review back in March that “Millennia’s unique strengths might pay off in the long run if post-launch updates and expansions are good enough, but as it stands, it’s a game of many rough edges and ‘quantity over quality’ which the less curious 4X fanatics may choose to avoid and watch from afar.”
Here’s the full list of features for Ancient Worlds:
Ancient Worlds adds new options at the game start, including a potential new government type, as well as a new diplomacy-centered National Spirit, landmarks and other content inspired by humanity’s earliest days.
- Nomadic Band Start: Open the game with an unsettled band of travellers, scavenging for resources to improve the strength of your group until you decide to settle down and form a proper society.
- New Threats: Megafauna stalk the land, threatening your prehistoric nomads but providing the chance for new events and experiences.
- New Terrain: A Frozen Terrain start introduces new challenges as it limits resource gathering, but lush grasslands and forests are revealed as the tundra melts and more hospitable settings expand.
- New National Spirit: Messengers is an Age II National Spirit that emphasises early game diplomacy. Give gifts to your rival nations, gather resources from minor nations and preserve their independence, and reap benefits from the new Llama special good.
- New Starting Government: Band Society: Rather than building up a Homeland, Band Societies rely on potent short-term bonuses and Tribal Camps to gain an early lead. They also gain a Nomad Band to scavenge terrain and settle an additional Capital Region.
- New Landmarks: Discover majestic natural wonders as you explore your new world. Mount Jianglang, Iguazu Falls, the Great Redwood Forest and eight more Landmarks can appear on the map, each with its own new Expedition.
