Publisher Warner Bros. Games has unveiled its rumored platform fighter Multiverse, giving us a first look at its roster, combat arenas, and future plans. Developed by Player First Games, the title pits beloved characters like Superman, Shaggy, or Tom & Jerry against each other in locations such as Batman’s Batcave.
Multiverse will be free-to-play and include in-game purchases, boasting a roster of 14 announced characters at launch that make for a rather impressive mashup of intellectual properties, alongside Reindog, an original character that might lack the star power of its peers but compensates by looking absolutely adorable.
Each character will have its own signature moves, like Bugs Bunny’s ability to tunnel across the level, or Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, that can be used cooperatively to ensure your team comes out on top. Three game modes have been announced so far: a 2v2 mode where the character’s customizable move sets likely shine the most, 1v1 matches, alongside 4-player free-for-all mode.
“Multiversus is a dream project for our team at Player First Games, and we’re excited to officially reveal the game,” said Tony Huynh, Player First Games Co-Founder & Game Director.
“We’ve built MultiVersus from the ground up to be a cooperative, social game that embraces teamwork and strategy. We’re also focused on providing first class online gameplay through dedicated server-based rollback netcode so that friends and rivals can enjoy a seamless competitive experience as they duke it out with our diverse roster of characters.”
Multiverse’s character roster will expand after launch as new seasons go live, bringing with them a host of content updates. The game is currently slated to release at some point in 2022 and is headed to PC, via Steam, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. Pre-registration is currently open on the game’s website for playtests happening prior to its official launch.
