Paradox Interactive has chosen to write down the development costs for The Lamplighters League. This move suggests they’ve reassessed the game’s financial value, indicating that its sales haven’t met expectations.
Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive, remarked that The Lamplighters League did not achieve the commercial success they anticipated, leading to a substantial financial setback in Q4 2023. Unfortunately, this could lead to a loss of nearly $22 million.
“The Lamplighters League is a fun game with many strengths. Even though we see cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services, the commercial reception has been too weak, which is frankly a big disappointment.” said Wester.
“Game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day, we haven’t performed at the level we should. It is painful but makes us more eager to roll up our sleeves and do better.”
In our review, we said that although The Lamplighters League’s “aspirations for a global adventure fall somewhat short and its commendable writing seems overshadowed, the procedural generation doesn’t consistently invigorate the experience. Nevertheless, guiding this band of unexpected allies on their quest to save the world is undeniably rewarding.”
The Lamplighters League is also available on Xbox Game Pass. While it has received a favorable reception from those who acquired it on Steam, reflected by its “Mostly Positive” rating, it has unfortunately only garnered a peak concurrent user count of 773 players, as per SteamDB.
Is it a marketing issue? It’s come out in an extremely busy October with lots of great games, but Paradox Interactive will be placing high stakes on Cities Skylines 2. They’re undoubtedly hoping its release can bolster the quarter when it launches on PC later this month.
