Tetris has come to Cities: Skylines, courtesy of one player’s creative use of stop motion and in-game screenshots to put together a short clip that attracted a lot of attention from the city builder’s community.
It all unfolds against a rather flowery background, reminiscent of a welcoming park or garden in which you can relax. Tetris pieces leave their box at the top of a green rectangular arena, gently making their way to the bottom. When they form a complete row, they flash before disappearing.
Cities: Skylines Tetris Stop Motion
The stop motion clip posted to Reddit is as familiar as can be for anyone who’s played Tetris before while introducing any Cities: Skylines players who might not have tried the venerable game to its rather simple concept.
As far as its creation goes, user ToadieZ explains that they “took screenshots rather than video footage and they were easy to stitch together,” putting everything together in approximately one hour.
Of course, the clip itself contains other elements Cities: Skylines fans will easily recognize, like the colors of the Tetris pieces resembling those of different zones or the Chirpy sound that plays when a row is completed.
ToadieZ singing along to the Tetris soundtrack also contributes to what makes the clip so entertaining to watch.
“That is really impressive stop motion. Well done,” reads the top comment at the time of writing.
“Another day, another ridiculously different way to play Cities: Skylines,” another user added.
Was told I wasn't a gamer if I'd never played Tetris, so I gave it a shot. 5/7, needs more skylines.

Better yet, this may not be the only version we’re getting. When a user pointed out only completed rows should flash rather than the whole stack, ToadieZ replied with the following: “I learned this like 5 minutes after finishing the edit and was so frustrated with myself. I’ll do better when I remake it in C:S2, promise.”
While it looks like we may be getting more stop motion goodness later this year alongside the sequel to Colossal Order’s city builder, other users replied by saying they’d like to see a mod that allows us to actually play Tetris in Cities: Skylines.
If not for the original, perhaps we’ll see that becoming a reality after Cities: Skylines 2 finally releases.
