Project Zomboid’s Build 42 update is set to bring additional complexity and features to the popular hardcore sandbox zombie survival game, making its release date a hot topic among its dedicated community.
Project Zomboid’s Build 42 update was mentioned as early as the game’s 2022 roadmap as intended to expand the game’s crafting system while improving balance. Months have passed since without it receiving a release date and, below, we’ll go into what we know about when it might launch and the content it’s expected to bring.
Project Zomboid Build 42 Update Release Date
Despite the long wait for it, Project Zomboid’s Build 42 update doesn’t currently have a release date that’s set in stone. The developer is steadily hacking away at the new content but hasn’t so far hinted at when it might all go live.
With a bit of luck, we’ll see it drop before the end of the year, but this is solely speculation on our end. Depending on how development progresses, it could be pushed to 2024.

According to the developer, the update is built around four pillars: “the crafting/animals update, the map expansion, the optimization/lighting/basements engine upgrade, and the weighty job the MP team have taken on to move all inventory interactions over from clients to server.”
In terms of content and improvements things also remain in flux as Project Zomboid’s Build 42 update continues development, but we could end up seeing smoother animations, a rewritten fire system, and revamped fishing.
The crafting system improvement is also chugging along, potentially adding blueprints in addition to existing recipes.
Project Zomboid’s Build 42 also brings with it engine improvements, including a new lighting propagation system that should translate to more natural ambient light effects.
In March 2023, the developer confirmed that “months of multiplayer reworking has made its way into the main development build.”
In addition, “the core systems of the massive crafting rework are also being merged into trunk, ready for the wider team to start building on it for the much anticipated deep crafting trees and new post-apocalypse professions for our overhauled crafting systems.”
Project Zomboid’s crafting overhaul changes “how recipes and items work on a fundamental level,” while also requiring quite a bit of work.
Work on the game’s new adaptive music system continues and is set to extend from just combat to also cover exploration.
Outdoor sleeping is also getting a series of improvements, with tents acting as both containers and (not so great) beds.
Plenty more is planned for whenever Project Zomboid’s Build 42 update release date ends up occurring. We’ll update this article as soon as we spot new details, but you can also follow the latest developments by visiting the game’s Steam page.
