Vampire-slaying looter shooter Redfall was originally intended to launch on PlayStation 5, according to its creative director.
A report coming from the latest wave of previews for the upcoming game indicates that Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax Media led to developer Arkane Studios pivoting away from the game’s PS5 version.
“We were acquired by Microsoft and it was a change with capital C. They came in and they said ‘No PlayStation 5, we’re focusing on Xbox, PC and the Game Pass’,” Creative Director Harvey Smith told IGN France (via Google Translate).
Smith goes on to say that he believes dropping Redfall’s PS5 version to be a “good decision,” as it translates to the developer having “one less platform to worry about, one less complexity.”
The existence of a Redfall PS5 version isn’t necessarily surprising, as the studio has routinely developed multiplatform titles.
The confirmation of Microsoft’s takeover prompting the developer to renounce working on a version of the game for Sony’s console is, however, interesting.
It also comes at a time when the company’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard is challenged by the PlayStation maker on the grounds of it taking FPS behemoth Call of Duty away from its consoles.
Redfall is slated to launch on May 2, 2023 when it makes its way to PC and Xbox Series X/S.
