It feels almost surreal to hear that a new Monkey Island game is coming this year. In an announcement nobody saw coming, publisher Devolver Digital and Ron Gilbert’s development studio Terrible Toybox have confirmed that Return to Monkey Island is, indeed, on the way, while sharing the first details about its release date.
Return to Monkey Island is described as a “follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge,” which is bound to sit right with fans of the classic adventure games.
Return to Monkey Island Release Date
As far as its release date goes, Return to Monkey Island was given a broad 2022 launch window, which means that we should see have it on our screens before the end of the year. During GamesCom 2022 it was confirmed that Return to Monkey Island would launch on the 19th September on PC and Nintendo Switch.

The game features an updated art style, its story picking up many years after Guybrush Threepwood’s last encounter with zombie pirate LeChuck.
As time swept over it, the world changed, Elaine Marley focusing less on governing while young pirates led by one Captain Madison made their names known.
Return to Monkey Island takes players to both familiar and new places, its classic point-and-click gameplay promising context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and an inventory system that won’t give us many headaches.
It’s Steam page also notes that it is the “exciting conclusion to the Monkey Island series.” Hopefully, Guybrush uncovers the island’s secret this time around.
More details regarding Return to Monkey Island and its release date will likely be shared over the course of the coming months and we’ll update this article as soon as we learn more.
