Developer Hopoo Games announced today that Risk of Rain 2 has sold over 4 million copies on Steam, where it is currently sitting at an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. One of the most popular third-person roguelikes in recent memory, its Anniversary Update also received a release date and is set to launch as soon as this Thursday, March 25, almost two years after it entered Early Access.
The developer treats Risk of Rain 2’s Anniversary Update both as a means to “really flesh out and round out the base game” and as a way to thank the fans that have been on board since the beginning.
“A lot of the focus of this update is revisiting old items and finishing up content that didn’t make it into 1.0 release - we’ve added like 88 lore entries,” it explains in a Steam post. The Bandit, once scrapped, is also making its way into the game. Its official version will be treated as a separate one to those put out by modders.
The Grandparent boss will be added to the Sky Meadows area while new items, skill variants, and various quality of life improvements are also on the way.
As announced last year, the Anniversary Update is the final one before work will shift towards Risk of Rain 2’s first paid expansion. Currently expected to launch in Q4 2021, the aim is for it to reach the size of 2-3 content updates.
While the Steam post linked above doesn’t go into details, players will be treated to new survivors, bosses, enemies, items, stages, a new game mode, music, and more when the expansion launches.
Risk of Rain 2 is now available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia.
