Risk of Rain Returns launched for PC and Nintendo Switch on November 8th and has achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim, culminating in a peak of 45,141 concurrent players on Steam. What do we know about developer Hopoo Games and publisher Gearbox Publishing’s plans for crossplay support, and could we see it open up to other platforms if Risk of Rain Returns releases on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5?</b>
Risk of Rain Returns breathes new life into the classic title, enhancing the signature roguelike adventure with fresh loot combinations, brand-new Survivors, a revamped multiplayer experience, and beloved content from Risk of Rain 2.
Does Risk of Rain Returns support Crossplay between PC and Switch?
Risk of Rain Returns supports up to four players in both online and local couch co-op, but it also boasts enhanced multiplayer services. For those who find the game challenging, teaming up with friends online can be a great option. However, if your group is split across different platforms, like one with the Nintendo Switch version and the others on PC, the lack of Crossplay could present an awkward situation.
Unfortunately, Risk of Rain Returns does not offer crossplay functionality, and there has been no official statement from Gearbox Publishing regarding its potential inclusion. As it stands, Nintendo Switch players are not able to team up with those on PC. The silver lining, however, is that PC users have some interoperability, with Steam players able to collaborate with those who have purchased the game on the Epic Games Store—though both are within the PC platform afterall.
There’s a chance that crossplay may not be implemented for “Risk of Rain Returns,” even if the game is released on more platforms such as Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5. This is considering the precedent set by earlier franchise titles like “Risk of Rain 2,” which did not feature crossplay support. It doesn’t support cross-progression between PC and Switch either.
If anything changes, we will let you know.
