A new replayable RPG is joining the crowded indie roguelike arena. Mino Games’ Dimensionals, which mixes “hero collecting, team building, deep strategy, and rogue-like replayability,” is now increasing the cadence of its playtests ahead of a yet-to-be-specified 2024 launch.
The studio’s goal seems to be creating a roguelike game that downsizes the usual grind found in traditional RPGs and even many recent roguelites, going straight into big boss battles and challenging combat encounters instead. The secret weapon that Mino Games plans to use? Tons of heroes that can be collected, each with their special skills and, of course, synergies that encourage experimentation.
While Dimensionals is a tactical RPG at its core, the developers are going for something more fast-paced than most games in the subgenre. For now, it also sounds like Dimensionals will be strictly focused on the single-player experience.
The catch? According to 2023 reports, the game was once built around certain Web3-based promises that seemingly didn’t pay off for the developer, especially as most players and even tech people started turning their backs on NFTs and other Web3-adjacent developments. Now, the FAQ section of Mino Games’ website states that Dimensionals is “a traditional Steam game” with a yet-to-be-revealed premium price. “We do not have any plans to integrate web3 or NFTs into our game,” the description underlines.
At the moment, however, Dimensionals is seeing a decent amount of traction online and increasingly frequent playtests, so it remains to be seen how the game will perform once it’s out in the wild. The hand-drawn heroes and animations are cool-looking, but it’s going to take more than that to convince the average player to give this once-Web3-based tactical RPG a try.
According to the devs, co-op and PvP might arrive at a later date, and microtransactions aren’t a thing in the current version either, so that might help the studio land a decent number of players when it fully opens its doors.
