Volition’s Saints Row reboot is real and set to come seven years after the last entry in the storied open-world action-adventure series. Unveiled during Gamescom 2021’s Opening Night Live, it features a brand new cast of characters that get to wreak havoc in an entirely new city, which is bound to have fans curious to know when its release date might occur.
As a series, Saints Row has gathered a bigger audience with each new title, all while progressively embracing its wacky, chaotic side, to the point where the fourth game in the series gave players superpowers and had them battling an intergalactic threat. The reboot does away with that and we’ll cover everything you need to know about it, including details about its release date, gameplay, setting, and more.
Saints Row Release Date
The Saints Row reboot was originally meant to launch on Febraury 25, 2022, six months after its official announcement. In November 2021, Volition Chief Creative Officer Jim Boone announced the studio’s decision to delay the game.
“Saints Row will no longer release on the originally announced date of 25th February 2022, instead it will launch worldwide on 23rd August 2022,” Boone wrote on the game’s website.
“Our priority is to create the best Saints Row game yet and, if we released on the original date, it wouldn’t be up to the standards we’ve set ourselves, and that you’re expecting and deserve.”
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was a key factor in the game’s delay. The developer plans on using the extra time to improve the title’s quality and polish, rather than make any significant changes in how it plays, which will hopefully make for a smooth ride when Saints Row new release date of August 23, 2022 comes around.
Saints Row Story
The Saints Row reboot’s story focuses on a brand new set of characters, players taking control of The Boss who, alongside Neenah, Kevin, and El, put down the foundation of a start-up company whose main focus is crime.
The title’s story follows the rise of The Saints as they battle rival gangs Los Panteros, The Idols, and Marshall to control the world of Santo Ileso, which is inspired by the American Southwest.
Saints Row Gameplay
Saints Row’s reveal showcased a more grounded take on the game that doesn’t shy away from massive explosions and silly moments. While we won’t be using superpowers to get around its world and blow up opponents, helicopters, motorcycles, and cars, alongside weapons like assault rifles and rocket launchers will most certainly do the job.
The three rival factions look and play differently. Marshall is an international corporation whose headquarters happens to be found in Santo Ileso. Described as “strategic assassins”, they rely on high-tech weapons and technology in combat. Los Panteros focus on “muscle and physical power,” preferring a more straightforward approach that involves frontal attacks and heavy use of melee weapons.
The Idols are “self-styled anarchists,” that may not be as sophisticated as the other two rival gangs, but make up for it by throwing plenty of bodies at their opponents. Saints Row will also feature character customization and allow you to build your criminal empire “the way you want to.”
The world of Santo Ileso covers wide stretches of desert as well as urban areas. It’s split into 15 districts, each having its own distinctive look. Los Pantero control Rancho Providencia, its rugged appearance contrasting the urban shine of Lakeshore, where Marshall is headquartered. Monte Vista is a haven for the rich and powerful, which is where you’ll also find the Idols.
Criminal Ventures is one of the Saints Row reboots’ new features, tracking the Saints’ rise from a mere gang to the rulers of a criminal empire. Players can shape their empire as they please, picking which businesses to build and where they’re placed.
The Bright Future Disposal facility brings the Saints’ money by illegally dumping the corporations’ toxic waste. The Shady Oaks Medical Center then acts as a front for an insurance front scheme.
