Survival game SCUM today received a significant chunk of new content, as its Dead Water Update 0.5 has finally landed. Going through its patch notes, you’ll notice that players can now explore new areas of the map, drive boats, fend off sharks, and more.
The Dead Water Update 0.5 extends SCUM’s map towards the east, adding new tundra and mountainous regions crossed by a southbound river that look to evoke a more rural feeling. In the south, there’s a new island with new docks and points of interest, including brick and weapons factories but also windmills.
Since you’ll need a way to reach the island and traverse the new river, you can now use motor, sail, and paddle boats to cross bodies of water. If you’re worried about running out of fuel in the middle of the ocean, worry not, as motor boats come with their own set of paddles.
If you somehow end up in the water, you’ll also have to deal with sharks, introduced in Scum’s Dead Water update. They’re faster swimmers than you are but if their jaws somehow end up around you, you’ll still get a chance to escape through a button-mashing minigame.
SCUM’s weather system has also been revamped in Update 0.5. Players will now encounter improved versions of day and night cycles, clouds, a more natural-feeling chance of rain, as well as moon phases that influence how far you’re able to see at night.
The list of changes goes further and includes a new fishing system, items, and several bug fixes. They’re all detailed in the official patch notes.
SCUM is available now on PC in Steam Early Access.
